Will a single, double, queen or king bed fit your room with space to walk?

Uses Indian mattress widths (36, 48, 60 and 72 in) and a 78 in length, with Asian Paints' 24 in minimum and 36 in ideal space around the bed and 36 in at the foot. Furniture, doors and wardrobes reduce the space.

In Indian homes, "king size" usually means a 6 ft wide mattress, which is 12 inches wider than a queen. That extra foot is the difference between two people sleeping comfortably and one person clinging to the edge. It also eats a foot of floor, and with side clearances, a king bed needs a noticeably bigger room.

This page gives king and queen sizes from Indian mattress makers, shows how to check if a king fits your bedroom, and collects 16 king size bed design ideas from wooden to upholstered. For wider style options, see the bed design hub.

King vs queen size in India

Indian mattress makers agree on widths: king is 72 in, queen is 60 in. Lengths vary between 72 and 78 in.

Wakefit also lists a super king at 78 x 78 in and notes brands can vary by 1 to 2 in. IKEA's sizes are metric and 200 cm long, so an IKEA frame needs an IKEA-size mattress. The safest approach: buy or measure the mattress first, then build or buy the frame around it.

Some international charts give larger king sizes. These do not match Indian maker charts, so ignore them when ordering locally.

Overall frame size: what a king bed actually takes

The frame is always bigger than the mattress. Pepperfry's guidance is that a frame extends 2 to 3 in beyond the mattress on each side. As a real example, Godrej Interio's Hannah King storage bed, listed on Pepperfry, takes a 78 x 72 in mattress and measures about 73 in wide and 85 in deep overall, 36 in high. The queen version is about 61 in wide and 85 in deep.

Carved headboards, wingbacks and side tables built into the headboard can add much more. Measure the overall frame, not just the mattress, when you plan the room.

Will a king bed fit your room?

Use the clearance guidance from Indian sources to check before buying:

  1. Room size: Pepperfry suggests a minimum of 12 x 12 ft for a king and 10 x 10 ft for a queen.
  2. Sides: Pepperfry gives 24 in on each side for a king; Asian Paints suggests 36 in as ideal and 24 in as minimum around a bed; Arcedior gives 60 cm minimum, 75 cm comfortable and 90 cm luxury.
  3. Foot: 36 in at the foot (Pepperfry). If the foot faces a wardrobe, Arcedior suggests at least 90 cm.
  4. Wardrobe doors: hinged shutters need about 36 in in front (Asian Paints); sliding wardrobes need none, which often makes a king possible in a tighter room.
  5. TV: keep at least 24 in between the TV unit and the foot of the bed (Asian Paints).
  6. Doors and windows: make sure the bed does not block a window you need to open or the path from the door.

Quick test: mark the overall frame size on the floor with masking tape and walk around it for a day. If the walk to the wardrobe or bathroom feels tight, choose a queen.

Headboards and height

A king bed is wide, so the headboard carries the look of the room. Arcedior recommends 130 to 160 cm headboard height (from floor) for a king. Wakefit suggests a tall 48 in headboard suits 9 ft ceilings and that at least 12 in should be left between the headboard top and the ceiling. For width, Wakefit gives 62 to 66 in for a 60 in queen, that is 2 to 6 in wider than the mattress. It gives no king figure, so ask your maker to size a king headboard slightly wider than the 72 in mattress.

Bed height: Arcedior gives 60 to 65 cm floor to mattress top as standard, 50 to 55 cm for low platforms and 70 to 75 cm for high bases. Bedside tables should match the bed height or be 1 to 2 in lower, with a depth of 12 to 15 in (Asian Paints). See bed back design for headboard ideas.

Storage in a king bed

The bigger the bed, the bigger the storage under it. HomeLane estimates a king hydraulic bed holds roughly 30 to 40 cu ft. Options:

  • Hydraulic lift: gas struts lift the whole platform; HomeLane notes strut force must match mattress weight. Easiest for daily access.
  • Box storage: cheaper but you must lift the mattress and planks; Duroflex notes hydraulic costs more than box.
  • Drawers: convenient but need side clearance to open.

Pepperfry notes storage frames add 4 to 6 in of height. More on mechanisms in box and hydraulic bed design.

Choosing a style

  • Wooden king beds suit bungalows and master bedrooms with a traditional feel. See wooden bed design for wood types.
  • Upholstered king beds are softer, quieter against the wall and great for reading in bed.
  • Low platform king beds make a big bed look lighter in a 12 x 12 ft room.
  • Four poster king beds need a tall ceiling and a big room; skip them in standard flats.

In a tight room, choose a slim headboard and floating side tables to save a few precious inches. For the whole room plan, see bedroom design ideas.

Frequently asked questions

What is the king size bed size in India?

Indian mattress makers list king as 72 in wide. Wakefit gives 72 x 72 in and a king long of 72 x 78 in; Kurl-on lists 72 or 75 in lengths; Duroflex lists 72, 75 or 78 in. IKEA India's metric king is 180 x 200 cm. The frame adds 2 to 3 in each side, per Pepperfry.

King size bed ka size kitna hota hai feet mein?

A standard Indian king mattress is 6 ft wide (72 in) and 6 to 6.5 ft long, depending on the brand. The frame adds a few inches on each side, and a big headboard adds more, so at Pepperfry's 2 to 3 in per side, plan for about 76 to 78 in (6.3 to 6.5 ft) of width once you include the frame.

What room size do I need for a king size bed?

Pepperfry suggests a minimum room of 12 x 12 ft for a king, with 24 in on each side and 36 in at the foot. If a hinged wardrobe opens towards the bed, add about 36 in in front of it, as Asian Paints advises, or switch to sliding shutters.

Queen or king: which should I buy?

Choose king if two adults (or a child who joins at night) share the bed and the room is at least 12 x 12 ft. Choose queen (60 in wide) if the room is closer to 10 x 10 ft or if walking space around the bed would fall below 24 in.

What is the difference between king and super king?

Wakefit lists super king at 78 x 78 in, which is 6 in wider than a 72 in king. It suits large master bedrooms or families who co-sleep with children. Check that sheets and comforters are available in that size before you order the frame.

How high should a king size bed headboard be?

Arcedior recommends 130 to 160 cm from the floor for a king headboard. Wakefit says a tall 48 in headboard suits 9 ft ceilings and that at least 12 in should be left between headboard top and ceiling. Lower headboards suit rooms with low ceilings or windows above the bed.
