22 Double Bed Design ideas
01Walnut Queen With Wingback Headboard
A tall wingback headboard in a walnut frame gives a queen bed presence without carving. Suits couples in a medium-sized master bedroom. Keep the wings within the frame width so side tables still sit flush.
02Sheesham Diwan Double With Drawers
A 48 inch diwan-width double bed in honey sheesham with two deep drawers is a classic for guest rooms. It fits where a queen would crowd the door. Ask for runners rated for heavy bedding.
03White Lacquer Hydraulic Storage Bed
A gloss white hydraulic bed keeps a small bedroom looking airy while hiding quilts and suitcases. Choose gas struts matched to your mattress weight so the platform stays up without effort.
04Cane Panel Double Bed
Woven cane set into a teak-finish frame feels light and stays cool in humid cities. It suits Kerala, Goa or Chennai homes. Seal the cane edges to stop fraying near the mattress.
05Low Japanese Platform In Ash
A low ash-wood platform with a wide ledge works as a bed and a bench. It makes a low ceiling feel taller. Low platforms suit younger couples more than elders who need an easier sit-to-stand.
06Channel Tufted Grey Queen
Vertical channel tufting on a dove grey headboard reads tailored rather than fussy. Pick a performance fabric if children jump on the bed. A matching bed skirt hides the box base cleanly.
07Carved Rosewood Heritage Double
Deep floral carving on a dark rosewood finish suits a joint-family home or a bungalow master room. Carved beds need dusting with a soft brush. Keep side tables plain so the bed leads.
08Sage Green Bed With Side Drawers
Side drawers instead of a lift-up box mean daily access without moving the mattress. Leave enough side clearance for drawers to open fully. Sage laminate hides fingerprints better than white.
09Metal Frame Four Poster
A slim black metal four-poster outlines the bed without blocking light. It works in rented flats as it knocks down for moving. Avoid heavy drapes in small rooms; leave the canopy open.
10Mango Wood Boho Double
Mango wood with a natural, uneven finish suits a relaxed boho room. Mango is moderately durable, so ask for a good termite treatment and polish. Layer rugs and kantha throws for warmth.
11Teak And Brass Inlay Bed
A teak bed with thin brass inlay lines is quiet luxury that ages well. Teak heartwood resists termites naturally. Brass needs an occasional wipe with a dry cloth to keep its glow.
12Pastel Pink Upholstered Double
A blush pink scalloped headboard brightens a daughter's room or a young couple's room. Scallops look softer than buttons. Pick a removable cover so it can be dry cleaned.
13Floating Bed With Under Glow
A cantilevered base with a warm LED strip beneath makes the bed appear to float. It also lights the floor for night walks. Use a low-heat LED and keep the driver accessible.
14Two Tone Oak And Navy Bed
Light oak sides with a navy fabric headboard give a smart, hotel-like contrast. Navy hides daily wear better than light fabric. Repeat navy in curtains to tie the room together.
15Rubberwood Budget Bed With Shelf Headboard
A rubberwood bed with an open shelf headboard is a sensible first-home buy. Rubberwood must be pressure treated, so ask the seller. The shelf replaces a side table in tight rooms.
16Arched Headboard In Terracotta
A tall arched headboard in terracotta linen adds a modern Indian touch. Arches soften boxy rooms. Pair with jute, brass and handloom textures for a warm, earthy palette.
17Leather Panel King Look Queen
A tan leatherette panel headboard gives a rich look on a queen frame. Leatherette wipes clean but can crack in direct sun. Keep it away from a west window.
18White Wash Pine Cottage Bed
A white-washed wooden bed with a spindle headboard suits hill-station cottages and bright rooms. Pair with quilts in checks. Whitewash finishes need a clear topcoat to resist stains.
19Box Bed With Panel Slide Access
A box storage bed with sliding top panels is cheaper than hydraulic and good for seasonal items. Access means lifting the mattress edge, so store rarely used things here.
20Emerald Velvet Statement Bed
An emerald velvet bed with a thick rounded frame suits a bold, jewel-toned room. Velvet shows pressure marks, so brush it regularly. Gold accents keep it festive rather than heavy.
21Grey Oak Bed With Floating Sides
A headboard that extends into floating side tables saves floor space and cleaning time. Fix the floating ends to the wall. Grey oak suits cool, modern rooms.
22Kids Share Double With Trundle
A double bed with a pull-out trundle handles visiting cousins or a child sleeping in. The trundle stores under the main bed. Check that the room has clear floor for it to roll out.

In Indian shops, "double bed" can mean three different things. Some sellers mean the 48 inch diwan double, some mean a 60 inch queen and a few use it for anything that sleeps two. Before you fall for a design in a photo, decide the width your room can actually hold. The sizes below come from Indian mattress makers, and the gallery that follows covers everything from a sheesham diwan with drawers to a velvet statement bed.
Double vs queen vs king: the actual widths
Indian mattress makers use the same three widths with small variations. Wakefit's size guide (September 2026) lists:
| Size | Wakefit (in) | Wakefit (cm) | IKEA India (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double (Diwan) | 48 x 72 | 122 x 183 | 140 x 200 |
| Queen | 60 x 72 | 152 x 183 | 160 x 200 |
| Queen long | 60 x 78 | 152 x 198 | n/a |
| King | 72 x 72 | 183 x 183 | 180 x 200 |
| King long | 72 x 78 | 183 x 198 | n/a |
Kurl-on says standard Indian lengths run from 72 to 78 inches, and Duroflex lists double widths from 43 to 48 inches and queen from 60 to 66 inches. Wakefit notes that brands vary by an inch or two, so measure the mattress you plan to buy before ordering a custom frame. IKEA's metric sizes do not match Indian inch sizes, so do not mix an IKEA frame with an Indian mattress.
The frame is bigger than the mattress. Pepperfry's guide (August 2026) says frames extend 2 to 3 inches beyond the mattress on each side. Godrej Interio's Hannah queen storage bed, for example, takes a 78 x 60 inch mattress but measures 61 inches wide and 85 inches long overall.
Will it fit? Room size and clearance
Asian Paints Beautiful Homes suggests 36 inches around a bed as ideal and 24 inches as the minimum. Pepperfry suggests a room of at least 10 x 10 ft for a queen and 12 x 12 ft for a king, with 24 inches on each side and 36 inches at the foot of a king. A quick way to check:
- Mark the frame size (mattress plus about 3 inches each side) on the floor with masking tape.
- Check that you can walk at least 24 inches on both sides and at the foot.
- Open the wardrobe doors and the room door fully; nothing should hit the tape.
- If side drawers are planned, open them in your mind too: they need extra side clearance.
If the tape shows a squeeze, drop from queen to diwan, or move to a bed with a slim headboard rather than a padded one that eats several inches.
Storage options and what they are like to live with
- Hydraulic lift: gas struts raise the mattress platform. HomeLane says the strut force (rated in Newtons) must match the mattress weight, otherwise it will not stay open or will be hard to close. Duroflex notes hydraulic costs more than box storage.
- Box storage: you remove the mattress and planks, or slide panels as on Godrej Interio's Hannah beds. Good for quilts and suitcases used a few times a year.
- Drawers: easiest daily access, but HomeLane points out they need side clearance.
Pepperfry notes storage frames add 4 to 6 inches of height. For more storage styles see our box and hydraulic bed designs.
Height and headboard
Arcedior, a furniture manufacturer, gives 60 to 65 cm as a standard floor-to-mattress-top height, with low platforms at 50 to 55 cm and high bases at 70 to 75 cm. For a double or queen, it recommends a headboard of 120 to 150 cm from the floor. Elders and anyone with knee trouble usually prefer the standard or high range; low platforms suit younger couples and rooms with low ceilings.
Choosing wood or board
Sheesham and teak are the classic solid woods. Teak heartwood is very durable and termite resistant (Wood Database); sheesham takes an excellent polish but its sapwood is vulnerable to insects (PROTA). Mango is only moderately durable and rubberwood is perishable unless pressure treated. For laminated beds, Greenply suggests MR grade plywood for dry bedroom furniture. Our wooden bed design guide goes deeper into woods.
Matching the bed to the room
Pick the bed first, then the rest. A carved bed wants simple side tables and plain walls; a minimal platform can take a bolder bedroom colour scheme. In a small room, keep the bed and wardrobe in the same tone so the room reads as one block. For wider options see our main bed design ideas and the king size bed guide if you have the space.
Frequently asked questions
What is the size of a double bed in India?
Indian makers such as Wakefit and Kurl-on call a 48 inch wide mattress a double or diwan size, usually 72 inches long. Many shops also sell a 60 inch queen as a double bed. Lengths run from 72 to 78 inches. The frame adds around 2 to 3 inches each side, so always confirm the overall frame size.
Double bed aur queen bed mein kya fark hai?
The width. A double or diwan mattress is 48 inches wide, while a queen is 60 inches wide per Wakefit and Kurl-on charts. Both are commonly 72 to 78 inches long. A double fits a smaller guest room; a queen gives two adults more room but needs a bigger floor area and clearance.
Which is better for a double bed, hydraulic or box storage?
Hydraulic suits storage you reach every few weeks, as gas struts lift the platform with the mattress. Box storage is cheaper but you must lift the mattress or slide panels, so it suits seasonal items. HomeLane advises matching strut force to mattress weight, and Duroflex notes hydraulic costs more.
What room size do I need for a queen double bed?
Pepperfry suggests at least 10 x 10 ft for a queen bed with a minimum of 24 inches on each side. Asian Paints Beautiful Homes says 36 inches around the bed is ideal. Mark the frame size on the floor with tape and check that doors and wardrobes open fully before you buy.
What is the best wood for a double bed?
Teak and sheesham are popular solid woods. Teak heartwood is very durable and termite resistant according to the Wood Database, and sheesham takes an excellent polish. Mango is only moderately durable and rubberwood must be pressure treated. Engineered beds in MR grade plywood work well in dry bedrooms.
How high should a double bed be?
Arcedior gives 60 to 65 cm from floor to mattress top as standard, with low platforms at 50 to 55 cm and high bases at 70 to 75 cm. Storage frames are usually taller; Pepperfry says they add 4 to 6 inches. Older family members generally find the standard or higher range easier.
