24 Bed Design ideas
01Walnut Panel Queen Bed
A full-width walnut veneer headboard panel makes a queen bed look built-in and hides wiring for reading lights. Suits master bedrooms in 2 BHK flats. Keep bedside tables at mattress height.
02Sage Upholstered Wingback Bed
Wing-shaped upholstered headboards feel cosy and stop pillows sliding. Choose a performance fabric that wipes clean in Indian dust and humidity. Works well against a plain light wall.
03Low Japanese Platform Bed
A low platform bed in light ash keeps a small room airy because you see more floor and wall. Best for young couples; older family members may find getting up harder.
04Carved Sheesham Double Bed
Traditional carved sheesham headboards suit joint-family homes and festive interiors. Sheesham takes polish well, so a honey or walnut finish brings out the grain. Dust carving weekly with a soft brush.
05Cane Weave Headboard Bed
Rattan or cane webbing in the headboard adds texture and lets air through, which helps in hot cities. Pair with block print bedding for a relaxed look.
06Navy Channel Tufted Bed
Vertical channel tufting on a navy headboard gives a tailored hotel look. Add a wall cove light above to wash the fabric. Good for larger master bedrooms.
07White Lacquer Kids Bed
A white lacquer single bed with rounded corners is safe and easy to restyle as a child grows. Add a pull-out trundle below for sleepovers or a visiting grandparent.
08Metal Four Poster Canopy
A slim black metal four-poster frame defines the bed zone without heavy wood. Drape light cotton on top in summer. Check ceiling height so the posts do not crowd the fan.
09Mustard Bouclé Curved Bed
Curved headboards soften a boxy room. Bouclé feels warm but holds dust, so vacuum it monthly. A mustard colour lifts north-facing rooms that get little sun.
10Floating Bed With Under Glow
A bed with a recessed base and LED strip below looks like it floats and makes the room feel larger at night. Use warm light and a dimmer.
11Pastel Pink Teen Bed
A blush pink upholstered headboard with a shelf ledge suits teen rooms and adds a spot for books and a lamp. Keep other furniture white to avoid a heavy pink room, and pick a removable cover that can be washed.
12Rosewood Colonial Bed
Colonial-style beds with spindle headboards and footboards suit bungalows with high ceilings. Dark wood looks rich against white walls and a pale floor. Leave space at the foot so the footboard does not block the walkway.
13Grey Fabric Bed With Side Storage
A grey fabric bed with drawers in the side rails keeps everyday linen close. Leave enough side clearance so drawers open fully, and choose soft-close runners so late-night use stays quiet.
14Two-Tone Laminate Headboard
Mixing an oak laminate frame with a teal fabric panel keeps cost low and looks custom. Laminate takes knocks well in kids' or guest rooms.
15Rajasthani Painted Bed
Hand-painted beds with folk motifs bring colour to a simple room. Keep bedding plain and walls white so the painting stays the focus. Ask for a clear protective coat so the colours do not rub off.
16Upholstered Bed With Wall Moulding
Picture-frame moulding painted the same colour as the wall behind a simple bed adds depth for little cost. Works best in pale shades like powder blue.
17Industrial Pipe Frame Bed
A metal pipe bed frame with a reclaimed wood headboard suits loft-style rooms and rentals since it dismantles easily. Add felt pads under the legs to protect tiles.
18Bed With Built-In Side Tables
A single long headboard unit that extends into side tables saves floor space and looks neat. Good for rooms where standalone side tables would block the wardrobe.
19Terracotta Linen Bed
Earthy terracotta bedding and a linen-wrapped headboard give a warm, calm feel. Linen breathes well in humid weather but creases, which is part of its charm.
20Mirror Panel Headboard Bed
Tinted mirror strips in the headboard bounce light in a dark room. Use bronze or grey mirror rather than clear to avoid a dated look, and keep it away from the bed foot so it does not reflect the TV.
21Loft Bed With Study Below
In a small room, a loft bed frees the floor for a desk. Keep a safety rail on all open sides and enough headroom above the mattress so a teenager can sit up without hitting the ceiling fan.
22Olive Leather Headboard Bed
Faux leather headboards wipe clean and age well. Olive is less common than tan and pairs nicely with warm wood floors. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun to avoid cracking.
23Twin Beds For Shared Room
Two single beds with a shared side table suit siblings or a guest room. Keep enough walking space between them; Asian Paints suggests 36 inches between two single beds.
24Minimal White Hotel Bed
A plain white bed with a tall grey headboard and layered pillows gives a hotel feel in any budget. Use white cotton sheets that can be bleached, and a wipeable headboard fabric for daily use.

Standard bed and mattress sizes in India
Indian beds are named after the mattress they take. Wakefit's size guide (September 2026) lists these common sizes; brands vary by 1 to 2 inches, so measure before ordering.
| Size | Mattress (inches) | Mattress (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 x 72 | 91 x 183 |
| Diwan (Double) | 48 x 72 | 122 x 183 |
| Queen | 60 x 72 or 60 x 78 | 152 x 183 or 152 x 198 |
| King | 72 x 72 or 72 x 78 | 183 x 183 or 183 x 198 |
| Super King | 78 x 78 | 198 x 198 |
Kurl-on notes that standard Indian lengths run 72 to 78 inches. IKEA India uses metric sizes, all 200 cm long (queen 160 x 200 cm, king 180 x 200 cm), so an imported or IKEA bed may not take a locally bought mattress. Remember the frame is bigger than the mattress: Pepperfry says it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the mattress on each side.
How much room you need around the bed
Walking space matters more than bed width. Asian Paints Beautiful Homes suggests 36 inches around the bed as ideal and 24 inches as a minimum. Pepperfry suggests a queen needs at least 24 inches on each side, and a king 24 inches at the sides and 36 inches at the foot; it puts a minimum room of 10 x 10 ft for a queen and 12 x 12 ft for a king. Arcedior adds that if the foot of the bed faces a wardrobe, leave at least 90 cm.
Quick way to decide:
- Measure the room wall to wall and note doors, windows and wardrobe shutters.
- Add the frame size (mattress plus a few inches each side) to the clearance on both sides.
- Check the wardrobe can open fully with the bed in place.
- If space is tight, step down one size rather than squeezing a king in.
Bed height and headboard height
According to Arcedior, floor to mattress top usually runs 50 to 75 cm, with 60 to 65 cm as the standard; low platform beds sit at 50 to 55 cm and high storage bases at 70 to 75 cm. Its recommended headboard heights from the floor are 100 to 120 cm for singles, 120 to 150 cm for doubles and queens, and 130 to 160 cm for kings.
Wakefit suggests leaving at least 12 inches between the headboard top and the ceiling, and for a 60 inch queen a headboard 62 to 66 inches wide. Bedside tables should match the bed height including mattress, or sit 1 to 2 inches lower (Asian Paints). Older parents usually find a standard height easier than a low platform. Materials: wood, engineered wood, metal and upholstery
- Solid sheesham: takes an excellent polish and its heartwood is durable (PROTA via Pl@ntNet); good for carved and classic styles.
- Teak: very durable and termite resistant heartwood (Wood Database); costlier, ideal for heirloom beds.
- Rubberwood: easy to work and affordable but perishable and prone to insects, so it needs pressure treatment (Wood Database). Ask the seller if it is treated.
- Plywood and engineered boards: most modular beds use them. Greenply recommends MR grade for dry interiors like bedrooms.
- Metal: light, easy to move, good for rentals; add felt pads to protect floors.
- Upholstered: soft and comfortable to lean on; pick removable or wipeable fabric in dusty cities.

Storage beds: box, hydraulic or drawers
Storage beds are popular in Indian flats where every inch counts. HomeLane explains that box storage needs you to remove the mattress and planks for access, while hydraulic beds use gas-lift struts that lift and hold the mattress platform; strut force must match the mattress weight. Drawer storage needs side clearance to open. Duroflex notes hydraulic costs more than box storage. Storage bases also add 4 to 6 inches of height (Pepperfry), so check bedside table height after choosing.
Choosing a style for your room
Match the bed to the room's size and light. Small, dim rooms do better with light woods, low or slim headboards and pale fabrics. Large master bedrooms can take a tall upholstered or panel headboard, a darker wood or a four-poster. For children, rounded corners and wipeable finishes matter more than looks; see single bed designs for kids and guest rooms. Keep one statement element only: either the headboard, the bedding or the wall, not all three.
Frequently asked questions
What is the latest bed design trend in India?
Upholstered headboards with channel or curved shapes, full-width wall panel headboards in wood veneer, low platform beds and hydraulic storage beds are popular now. Earthy colours like sage, terracotta and olive are replacing plain beige. Pick a style that suits your room size rather than only following trends.
Bed ki design choose karte waqt kya dekhein?
First check room size and walking space, then mattress size, bed height and storage needs. Asian Paints suggests 24 inches minimum clearance around the bed, 36 inches ideal. After that, choose material and headboard style to match your room. A bed that fits well always looks better than a bigger one squeezed in.
Which is better, queen or king size bed?
In Indian charts, a queen mattress is 60 inches wide and a king 72 inches (Wakefit, Kurl-on). Pepperfry suggests a minimum room of 10 x 10 ft for a queen and 12 x 12 ft for a king. Couples in average 2 BHK master bedrooms usually find a queen the better fit.
What is the standard height of a bed?
Arcedior gives 60 to 65 cm from floor to mattress top as standard, with 50 to 55 cm for low platforms and 70 to 75 cm for high storage bases. Elderly users usually find the standard range easiest because they can sit and stand without strain.
Which wood is best for a bed in India?
Teak and sheesham are long-lasting choices: teak heartwood is very durable and termite resistant, and sheesham takes an excellent polish. Rubberwood is cheaper but needs pressure treatment against insects. For modular beds, good quality plywood is common. Choose based on budget and how long you want the bed to last.
Is a hydraulic bed better than a box bed?
Hydraulic beds lift the whole mattress on gas struts, so you reach storage without removing the mattress. Box beds are cheaper, as Duroflex notes, but access means lifting the mattress and planks or sliding panels. If you open storage often, hydraulic is easier.
