18 Box Bed and Hydraulic Bed Design ideas
01Hydraulic Lift Open Display
A queen hydraulic bed with the platform raised shows how much storage sits under the mattress. Ideal for suitcases, quilts and off-season clothes. Ask the maker to match strut force to your mattress weight.
02Walnut Box Bed With Slide Panels
Box beds with top panels that slide over each other give access without lifting the mattress fully. A walnut finish hides scuffs from daily use and suits master bedrooms with warm wall colours.
03White Gloss Hydraulic King
A white high-gloss king bed with hydraulic storage keeps a large room bright and modern. Gloss shows fingerprints, so fit a recessed grip at the foot and wipe it weekly with a soft dry cloth.
04Diwan Bed With Drawers
A 48 inch diwan with two deep drawers works as a seat by day and guest bed by night. Bolsters and a fitted cover make it look like a sofa, and the drawers hold spare bedding for guests.
05Upholstered Hydraulic In Teal
A fabric-wrapped hydraulic bed looks soft but still hides lots of storage. Teal suits rooms with white walls and light wood floors. Pick a fabric with a tight weave so dust does not settle into it.
06Side Drawer Single For Kids
A single bed with three large drawers on the side holds toys and school books. Rounded edges and soft-close runners suit young children. Keep the lowest drawer for toys so kids can tidy up on their own.
07Box Khat In Rustic Mango Wood
A simple box khat in mango wood keeps a village or farmhouse look. Mango is not very durable against insects, so ask for treated timber and seal well.
08Grey Laminate Box Bed Budget
Laminated engineered wood box beds are the most affordable storage option. Choose a matte grey that hides dust and pairs with most bedding. It is a practical pick for rented flats and first homes.
09Headboard With Hidden Shelves
Storage does not have to be only below. A deep headboard with flip-up compartments holds books, chargers and medicines within reach, so bedside tables can be smaller or skipped.
10Front Lift Hydraulic Bed
Some hydraulic beds lift from the foot, others from the side. A foot lift suits rooms where the bed sides are close to walls. Check which way your unit opens before ordering, as it cannot be changed later.
11Diwan Daybed In Study Room
A slim diwan with lift-up storage doubles as a reading couch in a study and a spare bed for guests. Keep the cover washable and the cushions firm enough to lean on.
12Pastel Green Hydraulic Queen
Mint or pastel green storage beds look fresh in south Indian homes with lots of sunlight. Pair with white linen and cane accents, and keep the headboard slim so the room stays light.
13Platform Bed With Under Drawers
A low platform bed with four wide drawers below avoids lifting anything. It needs side clearance for the drawers to open, so it works best in bigger rooms with space on both sides of the bed.
14Carved Box Bed Traditional
A traditional carved headboard on a modern box base gives the classic look with today's storage. Popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan homes, it suits families who want heirloom looks without losing storage space.
15Hydraulic Bed With LED Base
A hydraulic bed with a slim LED strip around the base gives a soft night light for late bathroom trips. Use warm white light on a separate switch so it does not disturb sleep.
16Guest Room Diwan Set
A diwan set with a matching side table and box storage makes a guest room useful all year. Keep the mattress firm for sitting and add a fitted cover that can be washed after each guest.
17Fabric Box Bed Blush
A blush pink fabric box bed adds softness to a teen or guest room. Removable covers make cleaning easier, and a light colour makes a small room feel bigger.
18Sheesham Hydraulic With Rails
Solid sheesham frame with hydraulic storage combines strength and convenience. A raised side rail design helps older family members sit and rise, and the honey finish suits classic rooms.

In Indian flats, the space under the bed is often the biggest storage area in the room. A box bed design or a hydraulic bed turns that space into a place for quilts, suitcases and off-season clothes. This page explains how box, hydraulic and drawer storage actually work, what a diwan is and how big it is, and shows 18 storage bed ideas.

Box bed vs hydraulic bed: how they work
Both use the full bed footprint for storage. The difference is how you get in.
| Type | How you access storage | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box storage | Remove the mattress and planks, or slide panels (Godrej Interio Hannah beds use panels that slide over each other) | Rarely used items, lower budgets | Lifting a heavy mattress each time |
| Hydraulic | Gas-lift struts raise and hold the mattress platform (HomeLane) | Items used often | Struts must match mattress weight |
| Drawers | Pull-out drawers in the side or foot | Daily clothes, linen | Needs side clearance to open |
Duroflex lists hydraulic lift, box panels and drawers as the main access types and notes that hydraulic costs more than box.
Why strut force matters on a hydraulic bed
HomeLane explains that hydraulic struts are filled with compressed gas and rated in Newtons, and the force must match the mattress weight. If the struts are too weak, the platform will not stay open; too strong and it becomes hard to close. When you change to a heavier mattress, tell the maker so they can adjust or replace the struts. A good fitting also has a solid platform that does not flex when lifted.
How much storage you actually get
HomeLane estimates storage roughly equal to the bed footprint, about 30 to 40 cubic feet for a king. That is a lot, but deep compartments become a jumble without planning:
- Divide the base into sections: quilts at the head end, suitcases at the foot.
- Use zip storage bags so dust stays out; box beds sit close to the floor.
- Keep a cloth-lined base or ask for a laminate inside so fabric does not snag.
- Add a few neem leaves or naphthalene balls in sealed pouches for monsoon months.
Label each section on a note stuck inside the lid so everyone in the family knows where things are. Storage frames also raise the bed; Pepperfry notes they add 4 to 6 inches of height, so check your bedside tables still line up.
Diwan bed sizes and uses
Asian Paints Beautiful Homes describes the diwan as a Persian-origin low seat, often with an asymmetric arched backrest and arms, later adapted into settees, daybeds and low diwan cots, and smaller than a sofa. In Indian mattress charts, "Diwan" means a 48 inch wide double: Wakefit lists it as 48 x 72 inches and Kurl-on also gives 48 inches wide.
A diwan with box storage is a classic multi-use piece: a seat in the hall by day, a guest bed at night, and storage underneath. For other space-saving seats, see our sofa cum bed designs.
Material and build quality checks
- Base boards: most storage beds use plywood or engineered board. Greenply suggests MR grade plywood for dry interiors like bedrooms. Ask what board and thickness the base uses.
- Termite and borer protection: Greenply says treated plywood has chemicals applied to each layer during manufacture. Ask for this in humid cities.
- Solid wood: sheesham and teak are durable; mango wood is only moderately durable and rubberwood needs pressure treatment, per Wood Database.
- Ventilation: a fully closed box can trap moisture. Small vents or a gap at the base help in coastal homes.

Sizes and room fit
Godrej Interio's Hannah queen box-storage bed takes a 78 x 60 inch mattress with an overall size of about 61 x 85 inches and 36 inches height; the king version takes 78 x 72 inches and measures about 73 x 85 inches. Use these as a sense of how much bigger a storage bed is than its mattress. Pepperfry suggests a minimum room of 10 x 10 ft for a queen and 12 x 12 ft for a king. For king options see king size bed designs.
Frequently asked questions
Box bed or hydraulic bed, which is better?
If you open storage often, hydraulic is easier because gas struts lift the mattress platform for you. Box beds are cheaper, as Duroflex notes, but you must remove the mattress and planks or slide panels to reach inside. Many families pick hydraulic for the master bedroom and box for guest rooms.
Hydraulic bed design mein kya check karein?
Check that strut force matches your mattress weight, the platform is rigid, the lift is smooth and the bed opens from the side you can reach. HomeLane notes struts too weak will not stay open and too strong are hard to close. Also check the base board grade and finish.
What is the size of a diwan bed?
In Indian mattress charts a diwan is a 48 inch wide double. Wakefit lists it at 48 x 72 inches and Kurl-on also gives 48 inches wide. Frames add a few inches all round, so measure the wall before buying.
Can a hydraulic bed break?
The gas struts are wear parts and can weaken over years, so the platform may stop staying up. They can usually be replaced. Using a much heavier mattress than the struts were sized for also strains them. Buy from a maker who stocks spare struts.
How do I stop dampness in a box bed?
Keep the bed slightly away from damp walls, use zip storage bags, and leave the storage open for a few hours on sunny days. In coastal cities ask for treated board and a small ventilation gap. Avoid storing damp clothes or newly washed quilts.
What is a box khat?
Box khat is a common Hindi term for a simple bed with an enclosed storage base, like a box bed. It may be in solid wood or engineered board, usually with a plain headboard. The term is popular in north Indian furniture markets.
