01Refreshed 2BHK Living Hall
A simple repaint, one textured accent wall and a low TV console can change a tired hall without civil work. Suits rented or older flats. Tip: pick the wall colour after the sofa fabric, not before.
02Old Bungalow Verandah Revival
Restored red oxide floors, repainted wooden shutters and cane seating bring back the charm of an older home. Suits ground-floor houses with a sit-out. Tip: seal red oxide floors yearly to keep the shine.
03Upholstered Grey Master Bed
A soft grey headboard in a queen bedroom adds comfort for reading in bed and hides an uneven wall. Suits couples who want a calm, hotel-like room. Tip: choose a removable cover for easier cleaning.
04Sage Green L Sofa Corner
An L sofa tucked into a hall corner seats a large family while keeping the centre open for floor seating during festivals. Tip: measure both walls and the door swing before ordering the arm length.
05Sheesham Bed With Storage
A solid sheesham bed with hydraulic storage keeps quilts and suitcases out of sight in a compact home. Suits joint families short on loft space. Tip: check the gas-lift rating matches your mattress weight.
06Sliding Wardrobe Wall
Floor-to-ceiling sliding shutters free up walking space in rooms where a hinged door would hit the bed. Suits compact bedrooms. Tip: add a loft for seasonal bags and rarely used items.
07Fluted Walnut TV Unit
A wall-mounted unit with fluted panelling hides wires and set-top boxes and keeps the floor clear for mopping. Suits modern halls. Tip: plan the TV height at seated eye level before drilling.
08Pastel Kids Room Makeover
Soft colours, a single bed with a guard rail and a wall-mounted study shelf make one small room work for sleep, play and homework. Tip: keep paint washable so crayon marks wipe off.
09Retiled Compact Bathroom
Large-format matte tiles and a glass partition make a small bathroom look bigger and clean faster with fewer grout lines. Tip: ask for a proper slope to the drain before tiling starts.
10Dining Nook By The Window
A four-seater table beside a window turns a corridor end into a proper dining spot. Suits small flats where the hall doubles as dining. Tip: a bench on the wall side saves chair pull-out space.
11Pooja Corner In The Hall
A shallow wall-mounted mandir with jaali doors fits a living room corner without eating floor space. Suits flats with no separate pooja room. Tip: keep diyas away from curtains and fabric.
12Study Corner In The Bedroom
A slim desk between wardrobe and window gives a work-from-home spot without a spare room. Suits young professionals. Tip: place the desk side-on to the window to cut screen glare.
13Diwan Daybed Reading Spot
A low diwan by the window works as extra seating by day and a guest bed by night. Suits homes that host relatives often. Tip: choose a 48 inch wide mattress if two may sleep on it.
14False Ceiling Cove Glow
A simple peripheral false ceiling with warm cove lighting adds evening mood without heavy designs that lower the room. Tip: confirm the finished ceiling height first, especially in older flats.
15Navy And Brass Bedroom
A deep navy wall behind the bed with brass accents feels rich but stays calm at night. Suits larger bedrooms with good daylight. Tip: keep other walls light so the room does not shrink.
16Balcony Sit-Out Upgrade
Deck tiles, a foldable table and planters convert a utility balcony into a morning tea spot. Suits city flats with a small balcony. Tip: use outdoor fabric cushions that dry quickly after monsoon showers.

Most Indian homes are renovated in pieces: the kitchen one year, a bedroom when a child grows up, the hall before a wedding. This site is built for that reality. You will find design galleries for beds, sofas, wardrobes and living rooms, and plain-language guides to what renovation costs, how to finance it and what to check in an older house.
Everything is written for Indian rooms: compact bedrooms, halls that double as dining areas, joint families that need storage, and monsoon humidity that ruins the wrong board. Where we give a size, cost or rule, we name the source. Before you buy a bed, use the bed size checker to match mattress, frame and room. Before you call a contractor, put your numbers into the renovation budget planner so the quotations you get can be compared line by line.
Where to start a home renovation
Start with problems, not Pinterest boards. Walk through the house and list what is broken, what is inconvenient and what is simply dated. Leaking bathrooms, tripping circuits and seepage come first because every finish you add on top will be ruined if they are not fixed.
- Fix services: wiring, plumbing, waterproofing. Havells notes that wiring becomes more prone to crumbling insulation after about 25 years.
- Fix surfaces: plaster, flooring, tiles, paint.
- Fix storage: wardrobes, lofts, kitchen cabinets.
- Then furnish: beds, sofas, tables, lights and decor.
This order saves money because you are not breaking new tiles to run a pipe. Our home renovation checklist turns it into a room-by-room list, and home renovation ideas shows makeovers at different budgets.
What renovation costs in India
Published ranges vary widely because each source counts different work. Quote them with their scope:
| Source and year | Basic | Mid | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| NoBroker (2026) | Rs 500 to 800 per sq ft | Rs 1,000 to 1,500 | Rs 1,800 to 2,500 |
| Brick&Bolt (2025) | Rs 1,500 to 2,500 | Rs 2,500 to 4,000 | Rs 4,000 and above |
Brick&Bolt's basic tier includes paint, essential plumbing and wiring, flooring updates and simple storage, and its mid tier adds full kitchen or bath remodels and custom wardrobes; NoBroker does not define inclusions. Painting alone, per Asian Paints, runs Rs 12 to 45 per sq ft for interiors including materials and labour. Bedrooms: size the bed to the room
The bed decides how a bedroom works. Indian makers like Wakefit list a single at 36 by 72 inches, a queen at 60 by 72 or 78 inches and a king at 72 by 72 or 78 inches. Asian Paints Beautiful Homes suggests 36 inches of walking space around the bed, with 24 inches as the minimum. Pepperfry suggests a room of at least 10 by 10 feet for a queen and 12 by 12 feet for a king, so a compact bedroom usually means a queen against one wall, not a king.
Browse bed design for every style, including low, upholstered and platform beds. For the whole room, including wardrobe and side tables, see bedroom furniture design.
Living rooms: seating, TV and movement
Indian halls carry a lot: guests, festivals, the TV, often dining. Plan the walking path first. Wakefit recommends a 90 cm walkway between the sofa front and the TV unit, and a three-seater sofa is usually 175 to 200 cm wide. An L sofa seats more people per wall but fixes your layout, so measure twice.
See living room furniture for layouts, sizes, sofa choices and the TV wall that everyone looks at.
Materials that survive Indian conditions
Humidity, termites and hard use decide which material lasts. A few quick rules:
- Plywood grade: Greenply describes MR grade for dry interiors such as bedroom wardrobes and TV units, and BWP grade for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Solid wood: teak and sal heartwood are rated very durable and termite resistant; rubberwood is easy to work but needs preservative treatment.
- MDF and particle board: fine for dry furniture, but choose moisture-resistant grades near water.
- Fabrics: in dusty cities, removable covers and tighter weaves are easier to live with than delicate velvets.
Pick the board for the room, then the finish for the look.
Renovating an older home
Older homes need checks before design. In Mumbai, as reported by housing.com (June 2025), tenantable repairs such as plaster, paint and tiles need a society NOC but no Commissioner permission, while removing partitions or shifting a toilet in a way that affects structure needs written Commissioner approval. Under section 353-B of the MMC Act, as summarised by Lawyers Club India, buildings over 30 years old need a structural audit. Read old house renovation before breaking any wall, and keep the society informed from day one to avoid stop-work notices.
Frequently asked questions
Ghar renovation kaha se start kare?
Start with services and problems: seepage, wiring, plumbing and broken tiles. Then fix surfaces like plaster, flooring and paint, then storage, and finally furniture and decor. Working in this order means you do not break new finishes to repair old pipes. Make a room-by-room list and get itemised quotations so you can compare contractors properly.
How much does home renovation cost per sq ft in India?
It depends on scope. NoBroker (updated 2026) lists Rs 500 to 800 per sq ft for basic work and Rs 1,800 to 2,500 for premium. Brick&Bolt (2025) lists Rs 1,500 to 2,500 basic and Rs 4,000 and above for premium, with inclusions defined. Treat both as rough guides and get local quotes for your exact list.
Which bed size fits a 10 by 10 foot bedroom?
Pepperfry suggests a room of at least 10 by 10 feet for a queen bed, keeping 24 inches on each side. A king needs about 12 by 12 feet. In a 10 by 10 room with a wardrobe, a queen or a 48 inch diwan-width double usually leaves comfortable walking space. Measure door and wardrobe swing before deciding.
Can I take a loan for home renovation?
Yes. Banks such as SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank list renovation or home improvement loans, usually for fixed work like flooring, tiling, plumbing and painting rather than loose furniture. Terms and rates change often, so check the lender's current page. Our renovation loan guide summarises what each page listed in October 2026.
What is the best wood for furniture in Indian homes?
Teak and sal heartwood are rated very durable and termite resistant, and sheesham takes an excellent polish for beds and cabinets. Rubberwood and mango are cheaper but less durable and need treatment against insects. For wardrobes and TV units, many homes use MR grade plywood with laminate, and BWP grade near water.
Do I need permission to renovate my flat?
In Mumbai and Bengaluru, as reported by housing.com and onecityproperty.com, repairs like painting, plaster and retiling generally need no civic approval, but your society will expect an NOC. Removing walls or other work that affects structure needs municipal approval too. Rules in other cities may differ. Always check with your society office before work begins.
